The version of Lockdown Browser available in Rutgers Canvas is different than the version from other institutions; each download file is tied to an institution. If you need to use Lockdown Browser to take an exam or quiz in both Rutgers Canvas and another institution as part of a partnership program, then you will need to install two versions of the application on your computer. The directions below assume you have the Blackboard version already installed on your computer

Downloading and installing Respondus LockDown Browser. Go to your Canvas course site and click the quiz link. Click Take the Quiz. Click Download Respondus LockDown Browser. This takes you to the Respondus web site. Click Install Now. This will download a.zip archive containing either a.pkg (Mac) or.exe (Windows) file. Click on the 'Navigation' tab. Scroll down and click on the tree dots next to the 'LockDown Browser' option and then click on ' (+Enable)'. Click on the 'Save' button. LockDown Browser saved. Once you click 'Save', you will be able to see the 'LockDown Browser' option on your left navigation menu. The LockDown Browser will not let you do screen capture. A test that is programmed to run with Respondus LockDown will not run in another browser. PC

  1. Follow the directions to download and install Lockdown Browser.
  2. Select the option for a second institution.
  3. Click Next.
  4. In your Windows menu, you will now see two versions of Lockdown Browser.

Macintosh

  1. Navigate to your Applications folder.
  2. Locate your existing copy of Lockdown Browser.
  3. Right-click to show the mouse menu.
  4. Click Rename.
  5. Rename the application to include version (School 1 Name).
  6. Follow the directions to download and install Lockdown Browser. You may opt to rename the second version for Canvas.

LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Canvas. When students use Lockdown Browser they are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications. When an assessment is started, students are locked into it until they submit it for grading.

Getting Started

Using Respondus LockDown Browser in your Canvas course

To enable the Respondus LockDown Browser in any course:

  1. Login into Canvas and open the course.
  2. Follow the steps in the ‘How do I manage Course Navigation links?‘ guide to enable the link for the LockDown Browser Dashboard.
  3. Click Save.

To require students to use the LockDown Browser on a specific quiz:

  1. Login into Canvas and open the course.
  2. Click on LockDown Browser Dashboard in the left-hand navigation.
  3. Click the orange button to Continue to LockDown Browser.
  4. Click the arrow next to the name of the existing Quiz you want to modify and choose Settings.
  5. Choose to Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam, then decide whether to Require LockDown Browser to view feedback and results.
  6. Enter an Access code for this exam (optional).
  7. Click Advanced Settings, then choose additional options such as Allow students to take this exam with an iPad.
  8. Click Save + Close.

Note: it is strongly recommended to create a practice quiz with these same settings so that students have a chance to download and use the LockDown Browser ahead of the actual exam.

Using Respondus LockDown Browser in your Canvas course

To use the Respondus LockDown Browser on a quiz/exam:

  1. Navigate to the quiz in Canvas.
  2. Click Take the Quiz.
  3. When prompted, click the link to [Download Respondus LockDown Browser].
  4. Click the yellow button to Install Now, which will download the installer.
  5. Open the file and follow the prompts.
  6. Open the Respondus LockDown Browser app on your computer.
  7. Sign in to Canvas using this new browser and navigate to the quiz.
  8. Click Take the Quiz.
  9. Complete the quiz and Submit.
